Dental implants FAQ

Dental implants are now a tried and tested procedure for replacing missing teeth.  At Argyle St Family Dentist we use a specialized team including oral surgeon who places the implant into the gum along and works with local and high quality laboratories to achieve the best aesthetic and clinical outcome for your mouth and smile.

Why Dental Implants?

There are several advantages that dental implants provide over other tooth replacement options.  The amazing part about them is that they look and function just like a natural tooth.  But in the placement of a single tooth with an implant, it is done so without sacrificing the health of neighboring teeth.

Dental implants also maintain the bones in your jaw by encouraging more production of bone due to integrating creating chewing forces that sends messages to the brain to keep bone levels healthy and intact.

What is an implant?

Implants have several different components.

Screw or cylinder – this is the section that is placed into your jaw.  The period in which this part is incorporated into your bones and gums can take up to 2 to 6 months depending on the case.

Crown – this is the ‘tooth’ that is screwed into the cylinder that is submerged under your gums.  Just like a natural tooth, the tooth is held in place by the ‘root which is incorporated into the bone of the jaw.

How will a dental implant be placed?

There are normally several stages to dental implant placement.  Single stage placement can occur in certain situations, however most cases are not like this as sufficient bone is needed in order to safely hold the implant in place for the long term.

Surgical Stage – this is the placement of screw or cylinder into the gum of your mouth.

Impressions stage – this stage allows the dentist to measure and create a natural looking tooth in your mouth

Issue – the final crown is then screwed into place in your mouth, for a natural

How long will an implant last?

Dental implants have been shown to last up to and over 10 years.  However it depends on case to case and also how well an implant is looked after.   If not looked after properly dental implants can be susceptible to gum disease and this can affect the long term prognosis of keeping your tooth.

How much does a dental implant cost?

Whilst this varies from patient to patient, a single, non complicated dental implant surgery and crown will cost approximately $5000.  We are happy to discuss costs and your situation will impact the treatment involved so it’s important to visit us at our Parramatta surgery to answer any questions you might have.
