6 Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening

If you’ve ever wondered or thought about whitening your teeth, you’re not alone. Teeth whitening is one of the most discussed cosmetic dental procedures we get asked about.  At Argyle St Family Dentist we offer you a full range of teeth whitening options from take-home kits to one hour in chair Zoom Whitening.

Many people wonder whether tooth whitening is suitable for them so we’ve put together this list to hopefully answer any questions you may have:

1. Biggest Cause For Stained Teeth Is Dietary

Foods that we consume contain substances such as tannins that can mark or ‘stain’ your teeth.  Common foods that stain teeth include

  • Coffee
  • Black Tea
  • Red Wine
  • Curry
  • Soy Sauce
  • Soft drinks

2. Yes, Smoking Causes Staining on Teeth

The first step to a whiter smile will be to get rid of that smoking habit and quick smart.  Cigarettes are full of chemicals and tars that cause the hallmark, yellowish stain that we see on smoker’s teeth.  Before teeth whitening our dentists will assist you to quit smoking and improve the health of your mouth and gums to make sure you keep your teeth white for as long as possible.

3.Special occasions call for white teeth

Whether it’s that big wedding day, date, job interview or school reunion we always find that people want to make sure that their teeth are ready for the big occasion.  The biggest problem we encounter is when the big day is just around the corner and sometimes teeth whitening takes a bit of time.  To make sure your teeth whitening is ready for your special occasion make sure to plan well ahead as you may have underlying dental issues that will influence your result.

4. Aging Teeth

Yes this is true, as we get older our teeth lose that white gloss that they once had.  Whilst this is a normal part of the ageing process, it’s important to maintain good oral health as we age to make sure gum disease and other problems aren’t destroying our mouth.  Once your mouth is in good shape our dentists will work to make your teeth as shiny white as they were back in your school days.

5. It is a safe, non-surgical procedure

Many people ask whether teeth whitening is safe.  The answer to this is yes, IF, you’ve been fully assessed and cleared by a dental professional to say that you’re free of any underlying dental diseases.  Teeth whitening is the application of a bleaching agent to the surface of teeth to remove any impurities or stained elements.  In healthy tooth enamel this is completely safe and usually can be achieved without any side effects.

6. Are there any side effects?

Most people who have teeth whitening experience no side effects what so ever.  However the most common side effect will be sensitivity of the teeth to stimuli such as hot or cold.  Rarely this can be experienced in the form of a tooth-ache where sharp zipping pain is felt through the teeth.  In such situations a desensitizing agent is applied to the teeth that is often enough for symptoms to subside.
