Three Great Ways to Keep Your Children Interested in Oral Health

Three Great Ways to Keep Your Children Interested in Oral Health

Often dental health can seem like a chore, the key to instilling good oral health in your child is to make it fun!

At Argyle Street Family Dental we understand how difficult it can be to get children on board with maintaining good oral health routines, and to counteract your toddler’s tantrums we have come up with some great tips for making dental health fun!

1. Make up a brushing song

It may seem simple, but sometimes the simplest ideas have the most merit, and are most effective! Try incorporating a fun, easy song your child can brush along to with lyrics that will remind them to brush a specific way. Set the lyrics to old tunes such as ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ or ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat’ so your child can recognise the melody and be more receptive to brushing their teeth.

2. Let them copy you…

Tooth brushing can seem like a chore, especially when it looks like you are the only one that has to do it! Make your child’s oral health routine tie in with your own, so you can brush your teeth together and your child can watch to see what you do. This way your child can learn by seeing, and effectively mimic your actions for a more optimal routine.

3. Distract them with the mirror…

Instead of letting your child brush their teeth where they can barely see over the counter, safely sit them higher and closer to the mirror so they can see exactly what is going on. This will make them feel more involved in their brushing and be able to understand at closer inspection why it is important to keep them clean.

Make sure your child visits us every six months to ensure their oral health…

At Argyle Street Family Dental we recommend bringing your child in for their first check-up by age four. After this it is recommended to bring them in every six months so we can track their dental development and ensure their mouths are healthy and clean.
