There are many aspects to why you need, and what is the best way to rebuilding a tooth in your mouth. Let’s explore all aspects of why you may need a white filling.

Reasons Why You May Need A White Dental Filling.

When tooth structure is lost or damaged, it compromises the integrity of support that is required to withstand chewing forces.

Here are some conditions that may require you to have a white filling.

  • Tooth Decay
  • Broken Tooth
  • Replace An Old Filling
  • Tooth Enamel Defect
  • Stained or discoloured teeth

In the case of tooth decay, or broken teeth the dentist is aiming to reconstruct your tooth in order replicate the structure and function of your tooth. However it’s not uncommon for white fillings to be used for aesthetic reasons. If your smile isn’t as white due to old, darkened stained fillings or tooth structure, then a white filling can be designed to look like a natural, white, healthy tooth again.

What Are White Fillings?

White fillings are made from a special plastic or composite material that sets on exposure to UV light. This means that it starts in a soft malleable state and is bonded and set to your tooth to replace lost structure. This allows your dentist to assess and match your new white filling exactly to the colour of your tooth

In addition to having a more pleasing and natural tooth-like appearance, composite or white fillings, have the potential advantage of not containing mercury or other metals that have been used in older dental fillings.

How Long Should I Expect White Fillings To Last?

Whilst white fillings previously were not as durable as silver amalgam fillings, advances in technology have seen great improvement in composite materials which often require less tooth preparation and may not weaken the affected tooth as much as amalgam fillings. Generally studies show white fillings to last on average between 5-7 years. However this is largely dependent on individual circumstances.

Our dentists will let you know all the factors that influence your white fillings so that you fully understand your situation. It’s important to know that all dental filling and restorations should be checked on a regular basis in order to make sure they stay in tip-top shape.

Get Assessed Sooner Rather Than Later

If you think you have tooth decay or a broken tooth, or are concerned with the appearance of your teeth don’t wait until it’s too late to see if white fillings are for you. As with everything else, dental problems only get worse the longer you leave them, and treatment may progress past the point that a simple filling can rectify.
